Images of the 2008 Harvest Pg 4

Highmore, South Dakota, 2008 - Continued

By Scott D. Trostel aka The Webmaster

The first field to have low moisture was near Holabird, South Dakota, West of Highmore.  Harvest started about 4 p.m. and part of the crew was shifted from other fields to Holabird where several hundred acres wheat were ready.  Two 8010s were put to work, along with a grain cart and two hopper bottom grain trailers.  The harvest continued until about 10:30 p.m. when dampness brought the nearly harvested crop to a halt for the night.

Meanwhile the fields northeast of Highmore finally dropped to acceptable moisture in late afternoon, so a second crew, who had been there since noon, went to work. The next day was sunny and hot.  The crews were anxious to get to work and by noon they were headed out.  The rest of the custom harvesters in the region were also busy.  Lots and fields full of equipment were suddenly emptied and in every direction clouds of dust were evident across the plains.

The stalks were still tough but the harvest was abundant with the field generally well over 60 bushels per acre. The follower combine is in the left distant background.  -- Photo by Scott Trostel 7/25/08
